NGSS Vision  Innovation in academic programs and student services is key to the future of the University.  Need flexibility to deliver services and information in an ever-changing landscape of technology, globalization and policy developments.  The evolving Next Generation of Student Systems (NGSS) must be flexible and dynamic to: Support expansion of non-traditional learning structures Provide quality self-service at any place and any time, on any device Deliver a Penn-quality experience to a broader constituency (e.g. parents, ad-hoc learners, employers, vendors, etc.) Lower barriers to access and flow of student information NGSS Project Update CONFIDENTIAL 3

NGSS Today’s Situation Today’s core student systems constrain our ability to deliver this vision.  We cannot capture more comprehensive student, course and academic program data such as international biographic / demographic data in names, addresses, telephone numbers, etc.  We are limited our ability to store historical versions of course descriptions (1), the number of simultaneous academic program enrollments (2), the number of course instructors (9), etc.  More than 90% of the data transfers to/from the core student records system are done overnight (batch processing) with accompanying delays and adverse impact on customer service (slide14 & handout).  We lose information as it flows through systems. For example, full student name information is lost for ~74% of undergraduates (slide 15 and handout). NGSS Project Update CONFIDENTIAL 4

NGSS Evaluation Process  Full NGSS project scope is Student Records & Registration, Student Accounts, Financial Aid and core, common features. Admissions is not included.  Thorough analysis of requirements & product marketplace. Two viable options at time of evaluation: Oracle (Campus Solutions) & Ellucian (Banner).  Market share of large research universities: Ellucian 32%, Oracle 36%, homegrown & other 32%. (see slide 16 for a breakdown of our Ivy+ peers).  RFP & on-campus demonstrations completed fall ‘12.  Approach, timeline and budget estimates prepared. NGSS Project Update CONFIDENTIAL 5

NGSS Benefits  Student Accounts & foundation for Student Records deployed first, with accompanying near-term benefits: Real-time transactions & streamlined services. Lays groundwork for enhanced self-service, security & reporting. Begins move to flexible academic and student data structures needed for all releases. Replaces oldest core student system first.  Later releases deliver core components for Student Records & Financial Aid, and position Penn to manage the full breadth of capabilities to support current and future needs, such as: Students simultaneously enrolled in three or more programs. Expanded support for non-traditional students and programs. Enhanced self service registration and degree planning. Increased flexibility for transcripts & comprehensive student records.
