Craig Cliff- Author’s Purpose
Presentation transcript:

Author’s Purpose “Bridge to Terabithia” actually did have a clear enough purpose. The author herself, Katherine Paterson, actually wrote about her purpose for writing for the Scholastic Publishing Company.

Author’s Purpose We will read this article together first and then analyze in small groups.

In assigned groups of 4, in no more than ten minutes, for today’s points (group grade): Summarize each paragraph (person #1)--easiest Explain how the author’s family tragedy relates to the story of “Bridge to Terabithia” (person #2)—second easiest Explain why Katherine Paterson wrote “Bridge to Terabithia” (person #3)—second most challenging Explain how this might help us determine the purpose of “The Scarlet Ibis,” the purpose of which is never stated. (person #4)—most challenging

Remember to discuss, then each person must record a response in their own writing.

Author’s Purpose, for Discussion Why do you think James Hurst wrote “The Scarlet Ibis”? Is there a bigger meaning behind it? Write down two of your own ideas, first, in your warm-up notebook.

What is Stylistic Analysis? First, what is style in general? (Think broad, not just literature or English). Write your idea down first. So, then, if style allows an author to be engaging, pleasing, unique, and effective, for a specific purpose, stylistic analysis is the study, with literature, of how an author goes about creating it!

Basic Form An author uses literary devices… To shape literary elements To point to an overall theme/ purpose of writing

Key Lit Devices in “The Scarlet Ibis” Imagery Symbolism Syntax (sentence structure, how sentences are varied and formed) Diction (word choice, specifically considering connotation of words) Historical allusions For the examples above, list ONE example of each green term in your notebook. You may use your notebook.

Key Lit Elements in “The Scarlet Ibis” Mood Tone Structure (general) Story plot structure (specific—one element of plot structure is missing) (Just write the terms in your notebook; we’ll discuss these)

So Why? (Write ‘em all, but we’ll only write about ONE) To shed light on the innocent lost in war To show that pride—even good pride—can be destructive if not implemented wisely To try to make sense of great loss and put memory into a neat, orderly, “perfect” package

Our Essay- Modeled In Class Introduction Two paragraphs Device shapes element Conclusion (we will read; no need to copy)

To Start… How might you engage the reader? Where do you even begin??!!?
