New Gov outlook on NCLB- Duncan Wants to travel country Three key things: 1.Early childhood education 2.Better assessments 3.Teacher quality Different per state – Doesn’t make sense
New Gov outlook on NCLB- Obama /watch?v=SsVimwm6x Q4&feature=related
The Issue Is NCLB an effective piece of legislation?
Position 1 – Pro Good intentions Need accountability Incentive to do well Standardized testing – SATS/ACTS/AP Etc.
Position 2 - Anti Funding and Budget cuts – arts/sports/foreign language Test prep Proficiency rates No incentives Support, not punish Faculty jobs vs. test Knowledge vs. Creative Top students brought down
Position 3 – subject to change Our position Schools should improve Bipartisan support Original faulty, w/ improvements it could work Accountability, Sustainability, Flexibility
What does NCLB mean for us? Be creative “Thumb our noses at NCLB” or respect what it “imperfectly aspires to achieve.” (Walsh, 123) Skilled teachers Embrace, not resist
