An author writes a story using Characterization Techniques. A reader infers Character Traits 1.What the character SAYS. 2.What the character THINKS. 3.What the character DOES. 4.How others RESPOND to the character. POSITIVE: Courteous Honest Charming Patient Determined Caring Intelligent Cooperative Cheerful Loyal Selfless Adventurous Funny NEGATIVE: Dishonest Selfish Unkind Rude Impatient Cruel Evil Bossy Self-centered Stubborn Deceptive Conniving Manipulative

 Tells the audience what the character’s personality is.  Example: The patient boy and quiet girl were both well-mannered and did not disobey their mother.  Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.” DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION

 Shows things that reveal the personality (or character traits) of a character. The reader must infer the character traits based on the evidence in the story.  Example: So all we could do was to SIT SIT SIT SIT! And we did not like it– Not one little bit.  Explanation: The character’s thoughts reveal that he/she is bored and unhappy with his/her current situation. INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION

 Draw a line halfway down the center of a fresh page.  You will see a picture.  On the left side of the picture describe the characteristics of the character on the left.  On the right side of the picture describe the characteristics of the character on the right. WRITER’S JOURNAL

 Using the blank space underneath of your T-Chart, write a short story that uses the two characters and their characteristics in your chart.  Don’t forget the details to support your claims!  SHARE: What details did you use?

 In the literature textbook select either “Papa’s Parrot” or “Stolen Day” to read and analyze  You will be selecting one character from the story to write a character analysis paragraph on. This will be a summative assignment.  Please read the story that you selected. Once you are done please fill out the graphic organizer. This is also a summative assignment. NOW CHOOSE A SHORT STORY
