Vocabulary Clichés are worn-out expressions that writers use when they want a particular effect. Look at these clichés: a. the cat’s got your tongue; b. you’ve lost your marbles; c. keep your fingers crossed. Each cliché has a particular meaning: a. you can’t speak; b. you’re not thinking clearly; c. hope for the best. What do you think these clichés mean? not my cup of tea take a breather In this day and age All talk and no action

Proverbs Are old sayings that are used to give general truths about life. A fool and his money are soon parted. Honesty is the best policy. What do these proverbs mean? What do you think the following proverbs mean? Do as I say, not as I do. No news is good news A rolling stone gathers no moss. What you don’t know won’t hurt you.

For example, a semicolon can be used:

Continue… To separate items in a series where commas are also used: We visited Winnipeg, Manitoba; Toronto, Ontario; and Montreal. To join independent clauses in a compound sentence: We drove until dawn; our fuel ran out at sunrise. Between independent clauses joined by a transition word: The trip was great; however, I really didn’t like all the rain. Semicolons can be used between clauses joined by transition words.
