Character Traits Heroes in Literature Catherine Serpa Windsor Middle School

Introduction zI am a 6th grade teacher of a self-contained classroom. We are using an Elements of Literature book in which we are studying Unforgettable Personalities in short stories. zStudents will be able to identify various traits that a character in a story has and how those traits affect the outcome of the story.

Lesson Plan zFirst, students will work on the computer to identify their own personality traits using a self-assessment test. zStudents will next partner share to complete a Venn diagram and discuss similarities and differences they possess. zStudents will identify which character traits all heroes in the stories possess. zStudents will present to the class a discussion of one character, their personality traits, and how they affect the outcome of a story.

Expectations zI looked forward to working and completing this CTAP class in the given amount of time, but found that I needed to study the manual at home. zI expected the CTAP material to be more user friendly and not change so frequently especially toward the end of the semester. zI expected to involve my students in the learning process earlier in the semester.

Successes zEnjoying the camaraderie of teachers in the district. zFinding interesting and useful sites to use. zExploring the use of PowerPoint, clipart, Excel, and linking sites.

Drawbacks zMany times I felt that I would have liked to have worked on another topic. zThe CTAP web sight was extremely difficult to access which made it hard to work at my convenience.

Student Data Analysis

Summary of Revisions What did I change after looking at pre & post tests.

Results zI have learned from this CTAP class. zFirst, I have learned how to use Transmit, a software program designed to upload and download web pages. Secondly, I have done lots of work developing a web page that I hope to share with other teachers. zLastly, I learned how to successfully integrate this into my own classroom.

Summary of Revisions After talking to my students, we decided I needed a picture of Maya Angelou’s brother, Bailey. They also suggested doing the people worksheet with other partners. Their best suggestion was for us to do a dramatizations of the hero they chose.

Conclusion zI learned to successfully use the internet to integrate technology into my daily lessons standards based lessons. zStudents were able to differentiate important character traits. zLastly, I learned to use technology; zhttp://ctap295.ctaponline.org/~cserpa/
