Entry Task- You are the Teacher!  Take out your vocab homework.  Using the other students trifold, complete the worksheet for every vocab word.  Present your vocab sheet, show your artwork and make sure your fellow students understand your word in your own words.

Jamestown  English Merchants asked King James for a charter for the area of Virginia.  Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in America.  Not prepared for colonial life  2/3 of the original colonists were dead.

John Smith  Took over the colony in 1608  Made the settlers work harder and build a fort.  Rewarded harder workers with food.  Made friends with the Powhatan tribe  Tribe brought colonists food and showed them how to plant corn.

Sickness in Jamestown  In 1609, the colony received 400 colonist  A year later there were only 60 left!  Disease and famine struck the colony  Winter was called “The starving time”

John Rolfe  Introduced a tobacco that Jamestown farmers could sell in England  Married Pocahontas  Took her back to England where she died three years later.  Video Video
