East Lansing High School’s Story After participating in the professional learning opportunity at Mason High School in October 2012, Jodi Wheeler, Sheri Sekya, and Will Paddock were excited to invite their East Lansing High School colleagues to participate in their first Learning Walk on December 3rd. Twenty-three teachers participated in this collaborative opportunity. Teachers were encouraged by the professional, supportive conversations and the opportunity to reflect on effective instruction. With the support of district leaders, teachers plan to participate in a second Learning Walk in February and plan to offer one Learning Walk opportunity every month.

Haslett’s Story Haslett Public Schools has had 44 staff members participate in the TLT initiative and it has been an overwhelming success. Staff jumped right in and posted videos of their teaching for other TLT participants to view. Teachers embraced the strategies that Kevin Feldman taught and we have had staff wide Professional Development focused on implementing the strategies building wide. Learning walks have become a part of our culture and even non TLTs are participating in them. Teachers are using the TLT observation tool to provide affirmations and actionable feedback to each other. ~ Diane Newman, RtI Coach

Holt High School’s Story Holt High School received an NEA grant to support the TLT work. “ We had discussed as a staff how one of our goals was to become more collaborative, as well as increasing student engagement. The TLT process fits both of these goals. We have had at this point almost half of our staff trained on the engagement strategies and have had three learning walks in the building. Our goal is to also have a professional development session where we share this work with the entire staff and model some of the strategies in small group settings. The overall effort is to grow awareness of engagement strategies and how they can impact student performance.” ~ Jessica Cotter, Holt High School

Williamston Middle School’s Story After attending Kevin Feldman’s sessions on student engagement and literacy strategies during the school year, a small group of Williamston Middle School teachers, led by their RtI coach Kelly Campbell, decided to try Feldman’s strategies in their classrooms. They met with each other on a regular basis, even if it was just during the five minutes between class periods to share experiences. They observed each other during their prep hours, and found that the strategies were working with their students. Their excitement about the TLT initiative was infectious and pretty soon other teachers were asking if they too could be involved. By the end of that first year, every teacher in the school had experienced a Learning Walk.
