WIDGETS IN MARYLAND “Sweeping across the colonies” The New Corn Husk Broom

 Maryland was founded by George Calvert, Lord Baltimore in 1633  Maryland was formerly name province of Maryland  Maryland was founded for religious freedom  The 7 th original colony out of all 13  Maryland was named in honor of Henrietta Maria, Queen of Charles I HISTORY

THE COLONY PEOPLE  Most men in Maryland are planters.  Most women are house wives.  The house wives cook, take care of the children, and clean.  Maria Smith is a wife to Daniel Smith. When Daniel is at work Maria stays at home to take care of her rowdy children. Keeping the house in order with four kids is difficult, but not if Maria has the corn husk broom. Maria now takes less time to clean and more time to do the rest of her busy life.  The corn husk boom would be a must buy and they could not resist but to purchase this wonderful product.

CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY  The weather is extremely humid.  The winters are easy, but the warm weather causes disease to spread quicker.  Maryland is warm year round so growing the corn crops will be simple.  No worries will come around winter for the crops to fail. Maryland is mostly coastal plains.  The flat land creates a easy place for plantations.

ECONOMY  While being a colony, Maryland’s main economic crop was tobacco.  Shipbuilding, metalworking, and lumbering were big industries in Maryland.  Baltimore, Maryland soon became the nation’s largest steel making plant.  Maryland became a plantation economy and grew tobacco as a cash crop.  The slaves who work in the fields are experienced with the crops and will be able to grow miles of corn to make the brooms.

RELIGION  Maryland was not dominated by one specific religion  Settlers had different religions such as Baptists, Catholics, And Anglicans  Religious toleration already existed but was furthers enforced in as the colony was established.  Thank the gods for giving us corn husk to make brooms

POLITICS  Very crude but stable government  George Calvert made laws in consent of the freemen  Laws were passed by the governor George Calvert  A legislative assembly was created to help pass law one with free men and another with the governor.  Maryland’s politician agree that the open land should be used to grow corn crops.

RELATIONS WITH THE NATIVES  Natives welcomes the Maryland settlers with open arms  Charles I wanted the settlers to eliminate the natives but Maryland colonist let them be  Few tribes developed a relationship with the settlers  “we will eat at the same table; my followers will hunt with you; we will have all things in common”  Natives are willing to help settlers with their work such as growing/harvesting corn and tobacco.

FLAIR Let’s get down to business. To sweep the dust. Did they send me cloth? When I asked for corn. It’s the saddest rag I’ve ever used. But you can bet before were through. This broom will be a SUCCESS

CONCLUSION  Maryland is just the right place for the Great Widget Company to thrive and profit.  Using the effective, new corn husk broom, you will be able to “sweep across the colonies”.  Maryland also has trade routes to Pennsylvania and England.  Maryland has a replenishing supply of wood for many years.
