RUBE GOLDBERG Cartoonist Rube Goldberg ( ) began drawing fantastic machines more than 50 years ago. His cartoons depicted Boob McNutt, Lala Palooza, and witty character named Professor Butts, who used one absurdly complex contraption after another to turn the simplest task into incredibly complicated ordeals. Goldberg was making fun of the ideas that new methods and technology always represent better ways of doing things and new inventions are always improvements. Goldberg’s satirical look at problem solving through mechanical contrivance earned him a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1948.
