Starfish

Common N. Atlantic Starfish

Oreasteridae

Bahamas Starfish

Euretaster

Crown of thorns starfish

Fromia

Millipede 9 armed

Purple-spined Sea Urchin

Sunflower

Spiny Starfish

Brittle Stars

BAT STARS

Starfish Fossil

How do we classify them? Member of ECHINODERM phylum –Echinos – spiny –Derma – skin

Skeletal system Have an endoskeleton (inside skeleton)

Vascular (Blood) System –Water Vascular System (Water for blood) –Capture food –Move –Gas exchange/waste exchange

Symmetry There are 2 kinds of symmetry… Starfish have radial symmetry

1. Bilateral Symmetry Organism can only be divided to form equal halves

2. Radial Symmetry Many ways to cut organism giving roughly identical pieces

Radial Symmetry

Movement A network of water-filled canals, that branches into tube feet

Feeding Carnivorous. Uses its arms and tube feet to capture the prey.

Regeneration Replacement or regrowth of missing body parts

Reproduction Asexually by regeneration or sexually. Have either testes or ovaries as gonads in each arm. During certain time of the year, males and females gather and release sperm and eggs in the water, where fertilization takes place. At least 3 million eggs at one time. Regeneration of 3 arms!

Dissection

External Anatomy- 10 mins 5 rays (arms) Sieve plate Spines Dorsal/ventral Tube feet Mouth

EXPECTATIONS Dissection with a partner or virtual dissection You need- sheet from yesterday, starfish guide* tray, apron, goggles, scissors* starfish (from me) Before you begin: clear desks During: check off all parts you see and identify After: clean desks, throw away everything, rinse tray, scissors, put back by sink! Rules: respect, no joking, no yelling, no horseplay, NO WARNINGS! You only have 35 mins!
