CULTURE Lived with their extended family. Extended families then joined together to make a “local group”. Local groups held ceremonies together for may different purposes. One of the ceremonies that is still commonly held today, is similar to a Sweet Sixteen or a Bat Mitzvah. It signifies a girl becoming a young woman.

BASIC INFO  Largest North American tribe.  Population today is about 300,050 people.  Mainly located in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.  Speaks Navajo or English.  Religion is Christianity or a traditional tribal religion.  Lived in homes called “hogans”. CULTURE Preformed many ceremonies. Almost every act of there life, from building their house to planting crops, had a ceremony that was preformed for it.

 There was a lot of conflict between the United States of America and the Native Americans.  Conflict started with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, because more and more Americans were moving into the Indian’s land that they have owned for thousands of years.  Other conflicts occurred because the Americans didn’t understand the Indians’ culture.  Because of this Americans thought that the Indians were savages. So, they believed it was okay to take there land.

 The Transportation Revolution made it much easier to get to the Western side of the country because routes were made through the rocky Mountains.  The Native American Tribes thought that the Americans were destroying their land with these routes and tunnels.

 As a result of the expansion of America, many Native American tribes migrated south into modern day Mexico.
