Launch Out into the Deep Luke 5:1-11

Introductory Thoughts Jesus has a desire for us to launch out into the deep To be a people of depth Luke 5 presents the basis for our deeper commitment

A Deeper Commitment Peter was a part time disciple at this time – John 1:35-42 Part time in the sense that he was still working at his chosen occupation Jesus finds him tending to his net Fishing was done at night – Shallow Water No Rod and Reel – Used nets Nets must be stretched out to dry or else they would rot

A Deeper Commitment Peter and others had fished all night Tired – Exhausted – Disappointed Possible reactions to Jesus Note Verse 5 The fish are not biting I know about your work as a carpenter, but leave the fishing to me His obedience to the Lord’s request showed a deeper commitment

A Deeper Commitment Jesus does not want part time disciples Only following out of convenience He wants us to be committed deeply The men in Luke 5 Responded Immediately Left all – businesses, possessions, biggest catch of fish they had ever seen They followed Jesus Take note of this transformation from the shallow to the deep

A Deeper Faith Peter’s answer is a statement of faith Did as commanded based on the Words of Jesus Lesson for us today Accept the authority of Jesus’ Words Luke 6 records portions of the Sermon on the Mount Notice particularly Verses 48-49

A Deeper Faith Luke 8 records the Parable of the Sower Seed cast in all directions Stony ground could survive for a period of time Matthew 13:5-6 reveals the critical problem No Depth We too will suffer without depth of faith Deeper Faith results in great blessings

A Deeper Respect or Awe Results of the Miracle Luke 8:5-11 Think back to Isaiah Isaiah 6:1-8 Preachers and Elders are often asked these questions Why aren’t people involved? Why are people not being converted? Why do folks cause problems within the church?

A Deeper Respect or Awe The answer to the questions is easy Lack of Sight Lack of seeing God as He is We need to continually be aware of God - To see Him in his glory and majesty and might Also need to see ourselves through unclouded eyes Peter - Luke 5:8 Isaiah - Isaiah 6:5

A Deeper Love for the Lost Luke 5:9-11 In reality this was the message of this event Save Souls – Luke 19:10 Christ sat in Peter’s – It was his will that drew the fish to the net It will be Christ's will that draws man unto him

Are You Ready to Launch Out?
