THE PLANNING OF THE EASTER RISING By The 7 Blue Dwarves.

FACTS ABOUT THE EASTER RISING. The picture to the right is the flag that was used during the Easter Rising. The planning for the Easter Rising lasted two years. The IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood) was a secret organisation that planned the Rising. Patrick Pearse was the director of the military organisation IRB. The reason for the Rising was that Ireland wanted to be a Republic.

FACTS ABOUT IRELAND AT THE TIME Ireland were under British rule at the time of the Easter Rising. World War 1 was also on at the time. At the time there was no fighting going on in Ireland and the Irish people didn’t want to fight but that all changed in 1858 when the IRB was founded. The IRB wanted to make Ireland a Republic unlike other organisations they wanted to use force

THE IRISH REPUBLICAN BROTHERHOOD (IRB) The IRB was founded in The key leaders were Pádraig Pearse, Tom Clarke, Joseph Plunkett, Eamonn Ceannt and Seán MacDiarmada. The IRB wanted to make Ireland a Republic unlike other organisations at the time they were willing to use force. The IRB was a secret organisation. Pádraig Pearse

THE IRISH PARTY The Irish Party was led by John Redmond The Irish Party's main aim was to persuade the British Government to grant Home Rule to Ireland. Home Rule is where Ireland would be able to have their own Parliament in Dublin. The Irish Party was opposed to using violence to achieve Home Rule. John Edward Redmond

THE IRISH VOLUNTEERS The Irish Volunteers organisation that was setup to make Ireland a Republic unlike the IRB the Irish volunteers were a non- violent party and would like not to use violence where possible. Eoin McNeil was the leader of the Irish Volunteers. Eoin McNeil

THE FORGED LETTER During the Easter Rising the IRB sent a forged letter to the Irish Volunteers army to tell them that their party was now illegal and Eoin McNeill was to be arrested. Eoin McNeill didn’t like this so he decided to join the Rising. In the end Eoin found out that the letter was forged so he ordered the citizen army not to join the rising but some soldiers stayed and fought in the rising.

MICHAEL COLLINS Collins was born in Clonakilty, County Cork. He joined the Gaelic League and the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB). He became convinced that independence could only be achieved by force. Collins trained all the soldiers during the rising. Michael Collins

ROGER CASEMENT For years the IRB had been receiving money from American supporters who wished to Ireland to secure its independence. The IRB decided to spend this money to buy guns for the Rising. One of their supporters, Rodger Casement, was sent to Germany to buy arms. The Germans agreed to send a shipload of guns and ammunition to Ireland. The military council decided that the Rising would take place on Easter Sunday By that time, they hoped that the German ship, The Aud, which was carrying their arms, would have arrived off the coast of Kerry. Rodger Casement

THE AUD The Aud brought guns from Germany to the coast of Kerry before the Easter Rising but just as they were approaching Ireland they were caught by the British and sunk, the Irish were outraged and this made them angry.

These pictures were taken before and after the Easter Rising Before    After    O’ Connell Street

THE AFTERMATH When all soldiers were in their positions (GPO Stephen’s Green etc.) they ran out of ammunition so Padraig Pearse issued a surrender and the leaders were marched through the street and people threw tomatoes at them but all of them didn’t know that it helped greatly. Nearly all the leaders were executed but Éamonn de Valera because of his American birth. He later went on and became the president of Ireland.
