Jacobs Design Innovation Institute (JDII)

JDII Background CoE Advisory Board Document (April 2013): “this is an ideal time to extend and grow the role of design in our educational model at all levels: undergraduate, graduate and continuing education”

JDII Genesis $20 million pledged by Paul and Stacy Jacobs in May Berkeley Alums, long-time supporters of CoE and the campus. Goal is a 24,000 sq ft, 3.5-story building North of Soda Hall. “In our interconnected innovation economy, it is not enough to provide our future engineering leaders with technical skills,… They must also learn how to work in interdisciplinary teams, how to iterate designs rapidly, how to manufacture sustainably, how to combine art and engineering, and how to address global markets.” - Paul Jacobs, Clinton Global Initiative 2013.

JDII Priorities Undergraduate Instruction: Concentration in Design for Engineering Majors – Requirements TBD, a curriculum committee is working on this (3 elective courses w/ core course)? Minor in Design for non-Engineering Majors – 5 courses, only one sharable with the Major Goal of around 2000 student-courses per semester. Hands-on, studio courses. Small groups around a workbench. The Studio/Classroom: Projectors + Critique space + Lots of vertical work surfaces

JDII Priorities Masters Degrees ? Courses for Professionals ? Research Space ? TBD: Focus on undergrad education for now.

JDII Structure Director position announced, 1FTE allocated. Search includes both campus and external candidates. Staff: – Lab/safety officer – Academic program administrator – Finance, Special Projects ?? - still TBD
