Current on Pandemic H1N PNG 12 confirmed cases as 18 August, 2009 First case lab confirmed 18/6/09 with onset 14/6/09 Surveillance strategy; Case-based surveillance to detect ILI and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness cases with travel history together with Routine and Event-based surveillance to detect cases and clusters Community transmission not established Some positive System developments due to the Pandemic Influenza (H1N1)

Pandemic Plan The initial Plan was initiated due to the threat of SARS and Avian Influenza National Executive Council approves the revised plan responding to H1N in July 2009 with initial injection of approx US$3.5Million Plan to be integrated into the National Disaster Plan Provinces responded by re-activating their own plans

Laboratory The Pacific Ministerial Meeting agrees for improved laboratory service to provide real- time results for pandemic influenza’s and other public health events PNG plans to have its NIC to be upgraded to do R-T-PCR/ 2009
