By the end of the session you will be able to: List the main food groups State what is meant by a balanced diet State the effects of a balanced diet on health

What does healthy eating mean?

A balanced diet means having the right amount of food from each food group. 1 4 3 2 5

How much of each food you need changes as you get older How much of each food you need changes as you get older. Children need more food from groups 3 and 4 than adults. This is because they are growing fast. Their stomachs are small and so they will also need snacks from food groups 1, 2 and 5.

OVER TO YOU….. Get in pairs and list different types of food from each food groups. Remember to think of food that children will enjoy eating. You have 10 minutes.

Have a look Look at these two meals. Which one is for a toddler and which one is for an adult? What is the difference?

So what is a balanced diet? Having a healthy number of foods from each food group. A balanced diet has plenty of fruit and vegetable intake. A balanced diet also includes a certain amount of sugar MEN-daily calorie intake ? WOMEN-daily calorie intake ?

Over to you…. Think about what you have eaten in the last two days. Have you had five portions of fruit and vegetables each day? Have you had too many food that are high in fat or sugar? Work in pairs and list the food under the food groups. You have 10 minutes.
