Survey Documentation and Analysis (SDA) Overview What is online analysis? Available SDA data sets Available Statistical procedures Using SDA May 6, www.ssric.org
What is Online Analysis? “Online data analysis" refers to the ability to perform statistical analysis using special Web-based software as an alternative to downloading data into a statistical package on your computer. May 6, www.ssric.org
Data sets used in SDA Analysis From the SDA main page, click on Archive Tab to see a list of datasets available through Website, for example: General Social Survey (GSS) Cumulative Datafile ( ) American National Election Survey (ANES) Cumulative Datafile ( ). U.S. Census microdata (PUMS) List of other sources for SDA data sets: ( May 6, www.ssric.org
Available Statistical Procedures in SDA Frequencies and cross-tabulation Comparison of means Correlation matrix Comparison of correlations Multiple regression Logit/Probit regression May 6, www.ssric.org
Using SDA-Quick Tables Political party identification by race Quick Tables have variables pre-set for illustration purposes Click on GSS Cumulative Datafile Quick Tables Click on Politics and Voting by Background Variables Political party will appear in the first box; in the second box change gender to race May 6, www.ssric.org
Using SDA-Quick Tables, cont. Below race, next to “Limit the table to a certain year or decade” scroll through the drop-down selection and select 2010 Under “Chart Options” choose Bar Chart Choose yes by clicking on the box next to “show percents” Click on Create the Table May 6, www.ssric.org
Using SDA: Analysis Click on GSS Cumulative Data File The default page appears for Frequencies/ Crosstabs Other types of Analysis (e.g. comparison of means and regression) can be accessed through the Analysis tab in top left corner May 6, www.ssric.org
Using SDA: Crosstabs Does intensity of religious affiliation determine views of pornography laws? In the Search box above the list of variables, enter RELITEN, then click Go On the next screen, click on the link for RELITEN; this will place it in the Selected box on the main crosstabs page Once RELITEN is in the Selected box, click on View next to that box to read the question Below the Selected box on the main page, click on Col to bring RELITEN to the column box on righthand analysis section May 6, www.ssric.org
Using SDA: Crosstabs Repeat this procedure for the variable PORNLAW Since PORNLAW is the dependent variable, once PORNLAW is in the Selected Box click on Row Under Table Options, check Summary statistics and Question text (Color coding should already be checked) Under Chart Options, click on Pie chart in the drop down menu Click on Run the Table May 6, www.ssric.org
