Kafka's letters and diaries contain interesting insights into his complex relationship with his father and with Felice Bauer, to whom he was twice briefly engaged.
Style Characteristic of Kafka's work is the portrayal of an enigmatic reality, in which the individual is seen as lonely, perplexed, and threatened, and guilt is one of his major themes.
'Kafkaesque' is frequently used to describe work which employs similar narrative techniques, and evokes a similarly uneasy response.
