Introduction: Current System Last year students from FAMU/FSU College of Engineering and the Federal University of Paraná collaborated to design a tri-generation system producing: –Electricity –Refrigeration –Hot Water The wasted heat from exhaust gas was used to produce hot water & refrigeration. Tri-Generation system built last year.

Brazil’s Tri-Gen Prototype

Introduction: Problems with Current System Constant supply to refrigeration system needs to be controlled. Water-heating unit exceeding maximum temperature Engine only runs off of gasoline. Tri-generation System Previously Built

Introduction: Collaboration with Brazil Together the two groups will do the following: –Automate heat supply to absorption refrigerator –Manage heat to water supply and add a distiller –Modify engine for CNG (compressed natural gas) and propane –Use cooling effects of expanding gas

Modifications: Heat Regulation Thermostat Damper Actuator Damper/ Butterfly Valve Bypass Pipe Exhaust Piping in Current System with Bypass Valve Bypass Pipe

Modifications: Heat Regulation Damper/Butterfly Valve

Modifications: Heat Regulation Devices Actuators Used to position and control air dampers. Actuator moved to new position until system requirement is met and then stops. Proportional input signal provides the best control since actuator constantly being positioned in response to system requirements. Actuators with spring return can be set to return damper from either direction and have manual crank for precise adjustment.

Modifications: Water-Heating Unit Hot-Water-on- Demand –Bypass piping will reroute exhaust heat when water-heating unit not in use Bypass Piping Valve controlling exhaust flow Depiction of Bypass Piping

Modifications: Water-heating Unit Addition of Distiller –Takes advantage of excess exhaust heat to produce clean water

Modifications: Alternative Fuels & Engine Conversion Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been chosen as it can be stored at the high pressures required for the expansion The Carb Turbo #720- FD501-5 adapter kit was selected for our engine Storage Tanks for CNG

Modifications: Alternative Fuels & Engine Conversion How it Works: The carburetor adapter is installed between the gasoline carburetor and the air cleaner The adapter has a hose connecting it to the demand type regulator A venturi at the center of the adapter, producing a vacuum, thus drawing fuel into the airstream Amount of fuel delivered depends on how much air is flowing, which depends on how far the throttle is open Conversion Kit Attached to Engine

Modifications: Alternative Fuels & Engine Conversion Heating Value Mass Flow Rate Input Heat Heat Lost in Exhaust Temperature Change Exhaust Temp.

Modifications: Expansion Collaboration with Brazil The Brazilian team members have been working on the effects of the gas expansion and here are the results….. Refrigerator that will be cooled by expansion

Modifications: Expansion Please Refer to the Live Feed

Modifications: Parts Alternative Fuels –Conversion kit –Fuel tanks Refrigeration Heat Regulation –Bypass Piping –Actuator –Machining valve Water-heating Unit –Bypass Piping –Machining Valve –Distiller Expansion –Regulating Valve –Piping To be designed in Brazil! Parts to be Purchased To be Machined

Schedule/Plan: Fall Schedule

Schedule/Plan: Proposed Spring Schedule

Conclusion Final Design Package Deliverables: Bypass piping, valve and actuator to control heat supply to absorption refrigerator Water-heating unit heat bypass and distiller addition Conversion for engine to run off of CNG, propane, and gasoline Using expansion of CNG to cool refrigerator
