Acids… Learning objectives: Know that salts are formed from reactions with acids. Know how to write correct word equations. Know what salts are formed from certain acids. Turn to page 64

Acids and Alkalis When an acid neutralises an alkali two chemicals are made: Salt Water Sulfuric acid + sodium hydroxide sodium sulfate + water Acid Alkali salt Nitric acid + potassium hydroxide potassium nitrate + water Acid Alkali salt

Salts The name of the salt comes from the name of the acid: Hydrochloric acid makes chloride salts Sulfuric acid makes sulfate salts Nitric acid makes nitrate salts.

Word Equations Acid + alkali salt + water Give an example Acid + carbonate salt + carbon dioxide + water Give an example Acid + metal salt + hydrogen Give an example

Word equations Write these into word equations:  Magnesium and hydrochloric acid  Hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate  Sulfuric acid and zinc carbonate  Zinc and nitric acid  Copper and sulfuric acid  Nitric acid and calcium carbonate

Word equations  Magnesium and hydrochloric acid magnesium chloride + hydrogen. 2. Hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate Sodium chloride + carbon dioxide + water.  Sulfuric acid and zinc carbonate Zinc sulfate + carbon dioxide + water 4.
