Vocabulary Axes: points are located in reference to two perpendicular number lines y x 5 -5 Y-axis: the vertical number line Coordinate plane- the plane containing the x-and y-axes X-axis: the horizontal Number line Origin: the axes Intersect at their zero points

Ordered pair: points in the coordinate plane (x, y) X-coordinate: corresponds to the numbers on the x-axis. Y-coordinate: corresponds to the numbers on the y-axis.

QUADRANTS in the Coordinate Plane y x 5 -5 The x-axis and y-axis separate the coordinate plane into four regions. II (-,+) I (+,+) IV (+,-) III (-,-)

Ex. 1: Identify Quadrants 5 -5 a) (4, 0) b) (2, -1) c) (0, 3) d) (-4, -2)

Ex. 2: Recognizing Ordered Pairs Name the coordinates of each point in the graph. Q w P P b. T c. Q d. W e. V v T

Plotting Points (x,y) Start at the origin. The first number tells you how much to move left or right on the horizontal number line. From there, the second number tells you how much to move up or down. Draw a dot & label it.
