Lesson 1-6 Pages Ordered Pairs and Relations
What you will learn! 1. How to use ordered pairs to locate points. 2. How to use tables and graphs to represent relations.
Coordinate system X-coordinateY-axisY-coordinate Coordinate Plane Graph OriginRelation X-axisDomain Ordered pair Range
What you really need to know! In mathematics, a coordinate system is used to locate points. The horizontal number line is called the x- axis and the vertical number line is called the y-axis.
What you really need to know! The point where the two axes intersect is the origin (0,0). An ordered pair of numbers is used to locate points in the coordinate plane. The point (4,3) has an x-coordinate of 4 and a y-coordinate of 3.
Graph each ordered pair on a coordinate system. 1.(3,4) 2.(0,2)
G (1,1) H (4,0) y x Example 2: Write the ordered pair that names each point G H
Example 3: Express the relation {(1,4), (2,2), (3,0), (0,2)} as a table and as a graph. Then determine the domain and range.XY D= {0,1,2,3} R={0,2,4}
y x XY Example 3: Continued
Example 4: Austin earns $5 an hour doing yard work. Suppose x represents the number of hours Austin works. Make a table of ordered pairs in which the x-coordinate represents the hours worked and y represents the amount of money Austin earns for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours of work.
Example 4: ContinuedXY
Example 4: Cont. y x XY
