C Chapters EQ: How does a plot develop in conflict & action?

 Fables  Parables  Morality plays  Fairy tales  Religious works (the Bible, the Koran, the Rig Veda, etc.)

 Fables are stories that teach a lesson, usually with animal characters.  What are the two fables we’ve read so far?  What is the lesson the fable on the pigs is teaching about the natural world?  What is the lesson the fable on pp is teaching about the natural world?

 Gasemu is to blame for their parents being killed.  Gasemu is to blame for the kids’ not seeing their parents alive.  The boys are heartless b/c they’re laughing after Saidu’s death, talking about girls, and wrestling.

 Irony is the difference between what is and what we think is, the difference between appearance & reality.  Examples:  We train all year to play in the championship, only to get appendicitis the night before the game.  We watch a TV show where a guy goes into debt to buy an engagement ring for a girl who is cheating on him.  We watch “Disaster Date,” where the horrible date is a set-up.  A teacher says to us when we’re late once more, “You’re on time as usual.”

 Situational = the situation turns out differently than anticipated (surprise ending)  Dramatic = the audience/reader knows something the character doesn’t  Verbal = saying one thing but meaning the opposite

 What is ironic about the lieutenant’s reading Shakespeare?  What is ironic about Sheku’s & Josiah’s having to have a stool to hold up their guns?  What is ironic about Josiah’s falling backward b/c of so much ammunition?  What is ironic about Ishmael and the boys killing the other boys with the RUF?

 How do we see Ishmael’s utter degradation (becoming an animal) in ch. 14?  What has caused him to become this? (cause & effect)?  What surprising event happens in ch. 15?  Why is UNICEF’s goal not as easy as it sounds?  What is ironic about the situation?
