How Can ACM Better Promote the Role of CS / Computing Education Research? By articulating and communicating the benefits of computing education research to significant stakeholder groups True success stories and credible scenarios Written / told in a way that makes them relevant for administrators, policy makers, parents, employers, etc. By recognizing and celebrating major achievements in computing education research By collaborating with other professional and academic societies in promoting computing education research (e.g., through PACE)

How Can We Grow the CS / Computing Education Research Community? Be successful in efforts to legitimize and improve the standing of computing education research Recognize and reward high-quality computing education research Highlight the careers of successful computing education researchers Advocate for a broader computing education research perspective Help prospective researchers understand existing funding opportunities

Role of ACM Education Conferences? SIGCSE serves number of valuable purposes and can serve as a role model for other computing disciplines in terms of what they can offer to their teaching- focused faculty members Could SIGCSE be more open to other subdisciplines? On my wishlist is a high-quality (ACM) Computing Education Research conference that is explicitly open to multiple perspectives on computing education research ICER? is a great example of a multidisciplinary effort, and we can learn from it in important ways

Interesting Opportunities in CS / Computing Education Research Benefiting from the opportunities that collaboration across disciplinary boundaries creates Improved opportunities for data collection through MOOCs Computing Education + Data Science + Learning Sciences (as long as there is access to data and permissions/IRB clearances can be obtained) Collaboration with Learning Sciences Feeding back to the practice of tool development

What Can ACM Do? Create ethical guidelines for the changing research landscape (e.g., use of big data) Act as a broker in negotiations regarding access to MOOC data? Collaborate with other computing societies to recognize and promote the very best computing education research
