FICTION  Narrative writing that comes from a writer’s imagination  May be based on actual events and real people

FICTION  2 MAJOR TYPES : –Short stories: brief works that can usually be read in one sitting –Novels: longer and more complex narratives

ELEMENTS OF FICTION

 There are 5 elements to consider : Plot Character Setting Theme Point of view

PLOT  Refers to the chain of related events that take place in a story  In most plots, events are set in motion by conflicts—struggles between or within characters.

 Most plots include these stages: Exposition: provides background information Rising action: part where the conflict intensifies

Climax: turning point of the action when reader is most interested Falling action: where conflict is resolved

CHARACTER  The individual, real or imaginary, who takes part in the action of the story

CHARACTERS  There are 4 types of characters : Main Minor Dynamic Static

The development of characters is called characterization

SETTING  The time and place in which the events occur.  Can be real or imaginary.  Plays an important part in stories.

THEME  A central idea or message  Not the work’s subject but is a perception about life that the writer wants to communicate

POINT OF VIEW  The relationship between the narrator and the events he or she describes.  2 main points of view : First person Third person
