Presentation transcript:

The process:  Think about what you want to do in the long term  Research your chosen career/major; identify a school  Find the school’s transfer guides (if applicable)  Use the transfer guides to choose a major at NOVA  Customize your major at nova for your target major at the four-year school  Complete your degree at Nova

Earning a transferable associate’s degree at nova brings these benefits:  All of your general education requirements at the four-year school will be considered completed  you will automatically be considered a junior  You won’t pay to take classes at the four-year school that you could have taken here for at least three times less money

There is no “right way” to identify your long-term goals. We cannot tell you what those should be. What we can do is provide career assessments and resources to help you learn more and help as you work on clarifying your decision and making a plan.

A transfer guide often tells you the following: An appropriate major to select at nova to streamline your transfer Classes you could take at nova that apply to your major at the four-year school

BIO 101 BIO YOUR CHOICE (CONSULT CATALOG) MTH 241 MTH 242 ITE 140

Factors determining degree completion:  Placement test scores: what you score determines where you start, which determines what you spend  Retaking classes because you failed them, withdrew, or earned a “d” will cost you needless time and money  Changing majors often changes requirements for subjects like math, english, and foreign languages. This may mean taking additional courses to qualify for the new major.

Sequencing: certain classes have to occur in a specific order. E.G.: Math Mtt 4 → mtt 2 → mth 163 (precalculus)↓ ↓ mth 271 (applied calculus) ↓ mth 241 (statistics 1) → mth 242 (statistics II) Fall 2014 Spring 2015 Fall 2015 Spring 2016 Fall 2016 Spring 2017 Spring 2016

Your job is to advise _________ on what to do here at nova, given this information:  The student is starting nova in spring 2015  The student wants to transfer to mason  The student wants to study accounting  The student placed into mtt4 and eng 111/enf 3 bob Math sequence: Mtt4 → mth 163 → mth 271 → mth 241 → mth 242 English sequence: Eng 111/enf 3 → eng 125
