Classroom Technology Upgrades: The 2013 Edition For TIF May 29, 2013

The Big Picture 128 General Assignment Classrooms Managed by the Office of the Registrar Ongoing Maintenance by IET and Facilities Installation and upgrades subcontracted to IET, Space Planning, etc.

Installed Technology Display – Projector & Screen or Monitor Controller/Switcher Sound system – Amplifier, Speakers, Microphones*, Digital Sound Processor* Document Camera DVD/VCR Podcast Recorder* Media Cabinet Laptop Connectors Wired and wireless networking Remote asset management and control* * Installed in only some classrooms

Flashback: Edition 2007 ATS first established our “digital” standard – Extron controller with remote management – Digital sound processor Document cameras everywhere Podcast producer (pilot) Five-year transition plan 28 rooms installed … And then we stumbled over the budget cuts Limited ongoing support used to upgrade some projectors

Recent Actions CCFIT Ed Tech survey in 2011 Classroom Committee established Academic Senate Instructional Space Subcommittee of Budget & Planning reactivated Instructional Space survey – 2013

Findings & Current Status Survey Results – Poor lighting – Classrooms not well maintained – Lack of clocks – Insufficient wireless – Screens blocking blackboards Obsolete Technology – Analog devices – Outdated controllers – Undersized media cabinets

Results! Provost allocated additional funding for classroom upgrades Funds will be used for the following immediate upgrades: – Lighting - Wellman – Improved wireless connectivity - Wellman – 15 screen moves starting with Wellman – 3 complete technology upgrades – 36 projectors/LED monitors – 40 wireless microphones – Clocks

Next Steps Updating the Classroom Technology Standard: From 2007 to 2013 Providing Necessary Support and Maintenance Planning for future teaching and learning trends Funding the Future

Classroom Technology Standard: Edition 2013 All digital with ability to use analog sources Crestron controller with remote management Display – projector & screen or monitor Audio, including digital sound processor and wireless microphones Media cabinet with room for expansion Document camera DVD/VCR Wired and expanded wireless connectivity

Growing Maintenance and Support Needs 2004 – 116 general assignment classrooms with 6 FTE and 4 students on night crew 2013 – 128 general assignment classrooms with 2 FTE and 5 students on night crew More rooms, more technology, but fewer staff To provide reliable support we need: – 4 FTE and 5 students on night crew – Remote management in all GA classrooms

Future Teaching and Learning Trends Recording in the classroom – Podcasting -> Video lecture capture – Installed cameras Videoconferencing from any classroom The untethered professor – Tablets as controllers – Tablets as pallets Installed computers? Blu ray players (or not?) Smartphones as clickers

Funding Plan for the 1 st Year
