JUSTIN Main character/protagonist

Justin…Costume beginning The costume at the start of the film is very formal, sensible, conservative and clean. When he wears his suits they are greys- Typical English businessman, doesn’t have much experience in matters outside his own life. The grey, dull tones represent the westernised world, the upper class business world he has been bought up in and his lack of culture, unaware. It also represents his non-emotive persona, he’s a follower not a leader.

Costume- ending During the end of the film Justin is always wearing a baggy orange t-shirt. This represents him becoming more aware of the things around him in Africa, the landscape Orange is a mixture of colours, this representing the combining of Justin and Tessa as one. The orange also represents his learning, as orange is a combination of colours, he is gaining knowledge Justin sheds his diplomatic, British personality through his costume

First view of Justin- Shots When we first see Justin he is at the airport and the shot used is an over the shoulder establishing shot where we see half his face in shadow This represents his neutral character, his uncertainty of what's around him, and gives us a clue as to how he will change later in the film. When Justin and Sandy go to identify Tessa’s body. There is a low angle close up of Justin looking down at Tessa. Close ups show expression, but his expression is very together and he is hiding his emotions, this reflects his calm and reasonable personality. The fact he’s looking down on Tessa shows he is gaining power and gaining knowledge and Tessa has fallen, vulnerable because she has been killed, the power is in his hands.

The speech at the beginning The first scene of when Justin and Tessa meet we see Justin as a conservative type of person which contrasts largely with Tessa’s passionate, opinionated attitude. ‘I cant speak for Sir Bernard’-Justin ‘I thought that’s what you were here for’-Tessa. “Well, diplomats have to go where they're sent”- Justin “So do Labradors” – Tessa. This shows his personality of how he does what he is told and doesn’t go against the grain. Justin tries to calm Tessa and the situation down. Afterwards Justin goes to see Tessa to check if she is ok “ You were courageous”- Justin

Justin’s Personality Very apologetic and selfless side. He thinks of others before himself which develops more later in the film. ‘Thank you for this wonderful gift’- Justin. When Tessa dies he says to Sandy ‘Its good of you to tell me, Sandy, it can’t have been easy’. He tries to relieve people of bad feelings and emotions. He is very maternal, like his flowers, he makes sure others are okay and looked after before himself. Justin doesn’t say anything about the regarding as to where Tessa and Arnold were because he doesn’t like to make a scene and create drama. Like with his gardening he is trying to keep things together, weeding in a way. Justin tells Tessa he doesn’t like “mad, eccentric, hippy names". This shows his very proper, British lifestyle.

Justin Vs. Tessa (Personality cont…) After Tessa’s still born, Tessa wants to give the African kids a ride home Justin says no “We can’t involve ourselves in their lives Tessa” Later in the film, Justin goes through a major change in personality When he’s in Africa during the raid, the volunteers get on the plane, Justin tries to let Abuk onto plane. “To hell with what’s allowed” “This is one who we can help” This shows how he is becoming more like Tessa as he finds out more

Watching Justin After Tessa’s death, Justin follows her footsteps and tries to unravel her secrets. Shots- OTS shot when he is looking through Tessa’s things- like being watched, seeing what he is doing, looking at. At airport- pan across CCTV camera’s of Justin. Long shot of airport with Justin like he is being watched from a far. Close up of Justin looking in the rear-view mirror- paranoia he is being followed. He is this then ‘chased’ by someone who is trying to help him. The music is very fast paced and “thriller-like”, making us feel the precarious line between life and death, which Justin defies in his quest to avenge Tessa.
