Theatrical Elements Romeo and Juliet

Theatrical Elements Props, costumes, setting, lighting, and acting – what do these choices (made by the director) tell you about the film? We must analyze clips of films to really understand intent What does it mean to analyze? Consider this: what is the difference between analysis and opinion?

Boston Globe Movie REVIEW…not analysis http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/video/take2/?bctid=387756480 1001&pconnect_name=348067

Analyze the costume choices in this clip without any sound Analyze the costume choices in this clip without any sound. I bet you can tell who is the bad guy and who is the good guy!

Theatrical Elements What about acting? How important are a character’s facial expressions and body language to communicating what will happen next? Emotion is a critical part of a theatrical performance on stage, in film, and ESPECIALLY in front of the class 

Identify/analyze the stages of emotion here http://www. youtube

Theatrical Elements What about the lighting? The props? The setting? ANALYZE (do not review) the following scene from Great Expectations REMEMBER: A viewer can create an entire background story from simply viewing the current position of the protagonist and analyzing the setting of the scene.

Analyze this clip. Look for specific effects from the director for effectiveness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_JveFpGyUw

What did you come up with? The large space and furniture The adjusting lights The costumes The props in hand
