Bible Story-time Follow the Leader (Elijah and Elisha) I Kings 19:16-21, 2 Kings 2:1-15

Elijah, the Prophet of God Only three volunteers needed today : 1. Elijah the Prophet 2. Elisha the Prophet in-training 3. Narrator (N1)

Elijah, the Prophet of God N1 Now, way back in the day—like before Jesus was even born—God’s people had a hard time listening to God. They didn’t always want to follow God’s plan. So God sent people called prophets.

Elijah, the Prophet of God N1 Prophets would listen to God and speak His words to the people. And Elijah was one of God’s prophets. God would talk to Elijah… And Elijah would talk to God’s people. What kinds of things do you think the Prophet would talk about?

Elijah, the Prophet of God N1 The problem was, Elijah was the last prophet of God left and he was starting to feel very alone. When God’s people didn’t listen, it could be a heavy burden to be a prophet. And Elijah was a very OLD Prophet! He may have looked something like this.

Elijah, the Prophet of God N1 But God didn’t want Elijah to feel alone. So God told Elijah about a young man who could follow him, learn from him and who could be the next prophet when Elijah went to heaven. When Elijah heard about the young man, Elijah went out to find the person who God had chosen to be a prophet. And he looked and looked and looked and he looked… And FINALLY, he found him! And guess what he was doing when Elijah found him?

I Kings 19: 19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair.

Elijah, the Prophet of God N1 Elijah taught Elisha everything there was to learn about being a prophet. Remember, being God’s prophet was a huge responsibility.

N1 The Bible tells us that even though Eli-SHA had followed Eli-JAH for many years and learned everything there was to know, Eli-SHA stayed with Eli-JAH until the very end when Eli-JAH was taken up into heaven on—get this—a chariot of fire!

N1 Even though it was very sad when Elijah went up to heaven and everyone missed him very much, especially his friend Eli-SHA, Eli-SHA had learned all there was to know about being a prophet by following Eli-JAH around all those years and was ready to take on the role of leading God’s people.
