Physical Activity and Total Health

 It is not wise to start a sport or activity without careful preparation  Consult a physician, physical education teacher, or coach  Set appropriate goals

 Training Program – this is a program of formalized physical preparation for participation in a sport. ◦ Food provides energy necessary for top performance. ◦ Hydration – is the addition of body fluids (water)  Body looses water by sweating and intense breathing, which can lead to dehydration.  1 st sign of dehydration is fatigue  Your body can not work effectively  Thirst is not a good indicator  Thirst indicates you are already dehydrated  Drink several cups of water 2 hours before a work out and again 15 minutes before a workout

 This is another part of making healthful decisions and maintaining and athletic training program  Avoid: ◦ Tobacco ◦ Alcohol ◦ Anabolic steroids

 Anabolic steroids- chemicals similar to the male hormone testosterone  Sometimes taken illegally  Increases muscle mass  Increases performance

 Negative consequences  Increased risk of cancer and heart disease  Sterility or inability to have children  Skin problems acne and hair loss  Unusual weight gain or loss  Sexual underdevelopment and dysfunction  Violent, suicidal, or depressive tendencies  Illegal distribution is a felony  Athletes who test positive risk their careers

 Sleep helps the body re-energize. ◦ Too little sleep disrupts the nervous system causing ◦ Slowed reaction time ◦ Lack of concentration ◦ Depression  Teens need between 8-10 hours of sleep each night  Trouble with sleeping ◦ Look for a cause ◦ Try rearranging your schedule to allow time to unwind before bed ◦ Do not exercise before bed time ◦ Try reading or taking a bath before bed

 Effort and Ability ◦ We all have different physical abilities ◦ Heredity plays a part with speed and endurance ◦ Be realistic about your natural ability ◦ This does not mean you can’t follow your dreams if you give it your all

 Mind-Body Connection ◦ Be positive when you think you can do it you’re more successful

 Sports and Competition ◦ Completion can be a positive force ◦ Wanting to excel helps motivate some to develop fitness and perform at their best ◦ Builds character ◦ Generates team spirit and pride ◦ Builds close friendships with team members  Excessive need to win or be first can have negative outcomes ◦ You will not die if you loose, remember it is a game  Demonstrating good sportsmanship will help you avoid conflict.
