DNA – November 15, Get your homework out (Cell Organelle Worksheet) and put it on your desk so I can check you off. 2.What is a cell? How many types of cells are there? What are they? 3.Identify if the statement is Prokaryote (P), Eukaryote (E), or Both (B): – Is Unicellular – Has Membrane-bound organelles – Has Cytoplasm

Reminder Safety Quiz tomorrow! Safety Contract due tomorrow, too! You must score at least a 16 out of 18 in order to participate in laboratory activities.

Cell Organelles, Diagramming, and Eukaryotic Cell Types Ms. Klinkhachorn November 15, 2010 Biology

On your handout, label the cell:

Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Lysosome Nucleolus Nucleus Mitochondria Ribosomes Rough ER Smooth ER Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Lysosome Nucleolus Nucleus Mitochondria Ribosomes Rough ER Smooth ER

Make some observations Look at the two pictures of cells that you have in front of you. What kind of cells must these be? (Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic) How are they similar? How are they different? Do you think they are the same kind of eukaryotic cell? Why?

DNA – November 16, Get your Safety Contract out so that I can collect it 2.Why does it make sense that the Golgi Apparatus is usually found next to the cell membrane? 3.What does the mitochondria do, and what does it look like? 4.Where are the two places that ribosomes can be found?

Eukaryotic Cells: Animal and Plant Cells Cells Prokaryotes Eukaryotes Plant Cells Animal Cells

Make This On Your Paper Cell Structure What’s It Look Like? Where’s It Located? What’s Its Function? Vacuole Cell Wall Chloroplas t

Vacuoles Vacuoles can be found in both plant and animal cells, but plant cells have a LARGE, CENTRAL vacuole while animal cells have very small vacuoles if they even have them. This means that in a plant, the vacuole can be seen in the middle of the cell, and it looks a lot like a lake. The vacuole moves the nucleus in a plant cell over because it is so big. Thus, when you look at a plant cell you can see the nucleus on the side. The vacuole acts as a storage compartment for the cell. Examples of materials that can be stored in the vacuole are water, pigments, and poisons.

Cell Wall The cell membrane is the outer barrier of any cell. Plant cells have an additional barrier called the cell wall. It is found outside of the cell membrane, and it is really rigid. Having a stiff outer wall gives the cells more support and protection. The cell wall gives the cell a regular shape (such as a rectangle) unlike the cell membrane which doesn’t have a set shape. Like the cell membrane, the cell wall is permeable and can let certain materials pass in and out of the cell.

Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are found only in plant cells. They have a double membrane and stacks inside of them. They contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which makes them (and the plant itself) appear green. Chloroplasts are the photosynthetic organelles of the plant. They take energy from the sun and convert it into food for the plant to use.

On your handout, label the cell: Cell Wall Chloroplast Vacuole What kind of cell must this be? Cell Wall Chloroplast Vacuole What kind of cell must this be?

Compare and Contrast Animal and Plant Cells

Microscopes Used to magnify objects Invention of the microscope helped us discover cells – Technology is awesome!

Compound Light Microscopes These are the microscopes we will be using They use light and a system of lenses to help magnify the object on the slide

How to Properly Carry a Microscope You will be graded on this! Hold the microscope at 2 points – One hand on the arm of the microscope – One hand underneath the base
