NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AS CIVIL SOCIETY ACTORS Assoc.Prof.Dr. ERTAN KAHRAMANOGLU BASKENT UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK

CIVIL SOCIETY CIVIL SOCIETY REFERS TO THE ARENA OF UNCOERCED COLLECTIVE ACTION AROUND SHARED INTERESTS, PURPOSES AND VALUES. CIVIL SOCIETIES ARE OFTEN POPULATED BY ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.

NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS ( NPOs ) NPOs ARE LEGALY CONSTITUTED ORGANIZATIONS. THEIR OBJECTIVES ARE TO SUPPORT OR ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES OF PUBLIC OR PRIVATE INTERESTS WITHOUT ANY COMMERCIAL OR MONETARY PROFIT.

NPOs MOST COUNTRIES HAVE LAWS WHICH REGULATE THE ESTABLISHMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF NPOs.

NPOs NPOs MAY BE ORGAN İ ZED AS A, NOT-FOR-PROFIT CORPORATION, COOPERATIVE, TRADE UNION FOUNDATION, ASSOCIATION.

NPOs All voluntary organizations, charıtable organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can be counted as non-profit organizations (NPOs). These are all cıvıl socıety organizations.

NPOs NPOs ARE INDEPENDENT ENTITIES. THEY RULE AND REPRESENT THEMSELVES. THEY HAVE CORPORATE GOVERNANCE REGIMES.

NPOs NPOs HAS GOT BOARD MEMBERS, STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBER, AND THEIR OWN MEMBERS.

NPOs NPOs ARE OPERATED BY EITHER VOLUNTEERS, PAID STAFF OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH.

INCOMES OF NPOs MAIN INCOMES OF NPOs ARE: Governmental payments, Donations, Business earnings, Their own “real estate” incomes.

NPOs Community structures are generally organised around three power: The governments, Business, Non-profit sectors

NPOs All these three sectors must be present, powerful and working together for the sake of society.

ROLE OF NPOs NPOs PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMMUNITY.

ROLE OF NPOs NPOs PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN SHAPING AND IMPLEMENTING PARTICIPATORY DEMOCRACY AND ACTIVATING A COMMON SENSE OF PURPOSE WITHIN ALL SECTORS OF SOCIETY.

ROLE OF NPOs NPOs PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN EXPRESSING COMMUNITY INTERESTS.

ROLE OF NPOs NPOs PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN CIVIL SOCIETY BY BUILDING AND MAINTAINING IMPORTANT SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS.

ROLE OF NPOs NPOs provide a means by which people can interact and work toward common goals. Such experiences build ties between people and enhance social capital.

ROLE OF NPOs NPOs offer a means for creating communıty infrastructure. NPOs often work jointly on common concerns, sharing ideas, responsibilities and resources.

ROLE OF NPOs NPOs collobarate with government agencies and businesses to further community interests.

ROLE OF NPOs The social networks formed through these interactions contribute to a community’s overall quality of life and help strengthen it.
