Autism terminology Most Common that I’ve learned.

Autism Spectrum Disorders “A neurological disorder that effects a person's communication, social, and behavior skills.” ASD affects three different areas of a child's life: - Social interaction - Communication (verbal and non verbal) - Behaviors Each child has their own unique pattern of autism & behaviors.

Asperger's Syndrome Asperger's Disorder is different from autism because there are less severe symptoms. Children with Asperger's tend to be only mildly affected and frequently have good language and cognitive skills. A child with Asperger’s may seem just like a normal child behaving a little differently.

Developmental Milestones Children with autism tend to go to school or work with therapists to reach goals in behavior. They are put on schedule to reach target behaviors, learn new skills, and diminish self- injurious behaviors. Achieved with structured schedules & positive reinforcements.

ADOS Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule One of the best tools for diagnosing autism. Creating routine, daily schedule to maintain and record children's behaviors.

Repetitive Motor Mannerisms Self-stimulating behaviors Most commonly known as “stimming.” It is a repetitive behavior involving body movement. Examples of these behaviors are: hand flapping, spinning, jumping, eye movements, chewing, etc.

Self-injurious behaviors Children with autism tend to cause self- inflicted bodily harm These are types of behaviors that are typically recorded for data. (Target behaviors) Examples: head banging, hitting the face, biting, putting things in mouth, self- touching, eloping, non-responsiveness etc.
