Presentation transcript:

Teacher’s notes: introduction to presentation This lesson plan has been created by Kidscape trainers to support teachers in raising awareness of differences, particularly in relation to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities within a Key Stage 3 setting. Particular focus is on how these young people may be at higher risk of bullying, and how students can report bullying in their school. This presentation is part of Kidscape’s resource pack for Anti-Bullying Week 2014, that includes Key Stage 2 and 3 lesson and assembly plans in addition to awareness and fundraising activities. Please download the full pack, for free at NOTE: Comments for teachers are included in the notes section below each slide.

How can people be different? Discuss in pairs:

Don’t look down on me Video:

Learning objectives 1 To raise awareness of different needs and difficulties in school 2 To understand the types of bullying some young people might face. To know what to do if you or your friends are being bullied 3

Take your piece of paper Activity… Fold it in half like this

Activity write all the ways you can think of that someone might be different. On the left side… Take your piece of paper

Activity… Invisible differences write all the ways you can think of that someone might be different. On the left side…

What it’s like to walk down a street when you have autism or Asperger’s syndrome? Video:

Why might it be difficult for these students to concentrate in class? Why might this make them vulnerable to bullying? What sort of bullying do you think they might experience? Autism & Asperger’s syndrome

What can you do if someone is being bullied? It's the only way for the bullying to be stopped. It’s usually difficult to sort out the bullying on your own or even with the help of friends. Think seriously about telling an adult.

What have I learnt? Do I… Know more about special educational needs and disabilities in school? Understand the types of bullying some young people might face? Know what to do if you or one of your friends is being bullied?
