Spiritual Care Matters An Online Resource

Spiritual Care in UWS  Three academic studies in ‘UWS’ exploring various aspects of spiritual care in the pre-registration nursing curriculum.  All acknowledged the lack of spiritual care in the curriculum and the need to have a structured approach to spiritual care education.  Agreed Agenda:  Form a Spiritual Care Education Group – UWS & NHS partners  Introduce Spiritual Care in Year One (Common Foundation Programme)  Produce resources/materials to support teaching staff to integrate spiritual care as part of holistic care.  Explore ways of assisting staff and students to meet their spiritual needs.  Consider the educational needs of qualified staff in conjunction with our NHS partners.

NES Spiritual Care Matters & UWS  NES gave us the ‘kick start’ start we need.  Identified the interested parties in UWS.  Made contact with our NHS partners.  Formed the (School) Spiritual Education Group.  NES Application  Online/eLearning Pack – for use in the Common Foundation Programme. As part of the wider agenda:  a) Production of resources for the Branch Programmes  b) Support an application from NHS Lanarkshire for a conference for a local ‘launch’ of Spiritual Care Matters.

Where are we at today?  We missed the deadline for the January 2010 cohort.  The pack has been produced and piloted amongst staff and interested parties.  It will be launched on 24th May 2010 to 370 student nurses across the four campuses.  It will be introduced to senior managers and clinicians in NHS Lanarkshire on 2nd June  In July/August 2010 it will be evaluated and any changes made.
