Intro to Electricity

What IS Electricity?

A form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles

How do we harness this ENERGY?

Conductor Something that allows electricity to flow Examples; – metal – Water – air

Insulator something that does NOT let electricity flow Examples – Glass – Plastic – Rubber – Porcelain

Power Source Something that supplies electricity Examples; – Battery – Generator – solar panel

Battery Portable power source that has a positive and negative. The negative has extra electrons. They want to move to the positive side

Circuit path for electricity to flow

Load Something that uses electricity Example – Toaster – Ipod – Dvd player

Short Circuit unwanted contact of wires or parts in a circuit resulting in damage or malfunction of the circuit – Example: two bare wires touching

Voltage, Resistance & Current

Voltage (V) The “push” of electricity in a circuit Measured in VOLTS (V)

Resistance (R) The resistance to flow of electricity Measured in OHMS (Ω)

Current (I) The rate of flow of electricity in a circuit Measured in AMPHERES (A)
