What makes a strong central claim? Choose any topic, and write out a claim that you believe is strong and arguable. Entry Task Today you’ll need: Spring Board, journal, writing utensil, highlighter.

Open to page 63 As you read the informational text, I want you to identify the central claim by underlining it and marking it with a C. Then highlight the evidence that supports that claim. Underline the Counter Claim and mark it with a CC. Circle the counter evidence. Underline the rebuttal (it doesn’t always come after the Counter Claim). Mark it with an R.

Once you have finished Answer questions 7-10 on page 64. Use specifics from the text and complete sentences. Then using the My Notes section, write out an evaluation of the strength of the claim, and the strength of the evidence. What is strong; what is weak? Evaluate the use of the counter claim and rebuttal. Did it strengthen the argument? What could have been better?

Check your understanding- in journal Choose any of the articles, speeches, or spoken word videos you have seen over the last few weeks and rewrite the argument into one paragraph. Write the central claim of the argument, and then support it with new evidence- focused on logos. DO NOT USE THE SAME EVIDENCE AS IN THE ORIGINAL- just the “same” claim. *Remember, you are taking his/her argument and making it your own, so you aren’t saying “in the video, Colbie Caillat argued…”
