The Central Asian Research and Education Network KRENA Status Report by March 1, 2010

The Central Asian Research and Education Network Infrastructural Changes First in Central Asia KRENA move over to fiber optical connection in November In 2009 KRENAconnected Osh, Naryn, Karakol and schools. Also KRENA will enlarge the coverage area including Regions of Kyrgyzstan. Development of Applications Seismology, Disaster prevention and Water Management Distance education. Telemedicine. Human Resource Development KRENA providing Cisco LAB and CCNA Training courses With collaboration NITC we are providing IT training courses in different fields 1.Networking; 2.Database; 3.Software development; 4.Networking security 5.Programming languages. 1 Major Changes in KRENA The table clearly shows major changes in KRENA in many directions. Bandwidth of Universities Looking back five years, there is a clear trend in the bandwidth of universities. In 2004, the ‘average’ university was connected at 1-3 Megabit capacity; by 2009, that had changed to 7 Megabit capacity. It should be noted that increases are usually not gradual, but occur in steps, with the introduction of new technologies like Fiber Channel. For institutions other than universities, it is reasonable to expect that capacities will have increased as well. Now, speed of the traffic increase to 10 mbps ( 8 mbps provided by VISADA; 2 mbps bought from KyrgyzTelecom through Aknet.

Average core network size has quadrupled in that period, whilst the average core backbone capacity has more than doubled. KRENA has moved to Optical Fiber from November 2008 and the effect of the introduction Optical Fiber technology is clearly visible. 3.2 Number of Managed Links and Managed Sites on the Network Main OrganizationsNumber Universities24 Scientific-research institutes16 Information centers4 Schools and colleges10 Libraries1 Amount of users connected to the Internet71,000

The Central Asian Research and Education Network 3.3 Expected Change in Core Capacity 3.4 Networking Equipment 1 During 2010 KRENA will expand network infrastructure to regions of Kyrgyz Republic 2By the CAREN Project KRENA’s core capacity will grow up to 34 Mbps 3 Now KRENA team is developing new project on implementation of wireless networks (WiFi / WiMAX) in educational structures Typically, the core capacity goes up in leaps, sometimes involving a change from one type of technology to another. Note also that it is not always easy to predict the evolution in core capacity. This is because this evolution depends on many factors, such as developments in technology, pricing and the availability of sufficient funds for investment. KRENA’s equipments are mainly consist of several core switches and router. But in order to develop further, KRENA needs serious investments of networking equipments. KRENA is updating its equipment to meet CAREN network requirements KRENA has full CISCO CCNA Bundle which is now we are using for Cisco Local Academy for Human Resource Development on Educational Institutions Copyright © 2010 KRENA/ Chui ave, 265a, Bishkek, The Kyrgyz Republic / Tel: website:

Booklet of KRENA is made and distributed on high schools KRENA is expanding its coverage area to the Regions of Kyrgyzstan. As planned, 2010 Budget is approximately € KRENA launched CERT service which is currently on the testing phase. KRENA is running Cisco Local Academy and giving CCNA Training courses Following CAREN Project, KRENA’s core capacity will grow up to 34 Mbps Constantly increase number of users of network KRENA
