TERM 1/2 – THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION TERM 2/3 – AUSTRALIA AND ASIA TERM 3/4 – WORLD WAR I Units for 2012

So this is what history looks like…

What does a historian do? A historian is somebody who studies and writes about history. A historian asks five main questions in their study of history: WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY?

Primary Source Secondary Source A primary source is a written source, picture or artefact that was created DURING THE PERIOD. The coins below were cast in the Middle Ages. Historians and archaeologists can use these PRIMARY SOURCES to find out more about the Medieval period. A secondary source is a written source or picture that was created AFTER THE EVENT OR PERIOD. The book below is a SECONDARY SOURCE written after the Middle Ages. Historians use these sources to find information about the past. Sources

Primary or Secondary?

The period before the Modern era, which we live in today, was known as the MIDDLE AGES. Society relied heavily on farming and trade to survive during this era. There were no machines or factories to produce goods. EVERYTHING was done by people and animals. Medieval agriculture relied heavily on the use of horses and oxen to plough fields. The above PRIMARY SOURCE shows methods used during the period. What are some indications that this is a primary source?

The Feudal System

During the Middle Ages the feudal system was a convenient political and economic system used in many European countries. The population was divided into classes – the powerful KING at the top, the privileged BARONS below, followed by the revered KNIGHTS, and, finally, scrubbing around at the bottom of the heap were the PEASANTS or VILLEINS. These guys had it pretty tough.

Then and Now We live in a democratic, industrialized country. Most Australians grow up expecting and receiving equal treatment. So how did we get here? Middle Ages – 500AD – 1500AD NOW – 2012 AD

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IS THE NAME GIVEN TO THE RAPID ADVANCES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY THAT WERE MADE IN THE LAST HALF OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY AND THE FIRST HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY – 1750AD TO 1900AD. The Industrial Revolution
