Interesting Introductions Using: Grabbers, Hooks, Leads

Use an interesting introduction with a grabber, hook, lead: 1. Never say “Hello….blah blah” or “This essay will be about…” THAT IS BORING! THAT IS BORING! 2. You never get a second chance to make a first impression! Ten techniques we will learn about: Action Lead Anecdote Character “Thought-shot” Definition Lead Dialogue Lead Famous Quotation (Quote Lead) Riddle Lead Shocking Statement Lead Question Lead Vivid Visualization Lead

RIDDLE LEAD Get your reader ’ s attention with a challenging thought. Example: What ’ s plain, and boring? What makes all students in a school building look the same and lose their individuality? If you guessed UNIFORMS, you ’ re correct!

SHOCKING STATEMENTS Provides statistics or facts that startle readers to pull them into your story. Example: Can you believe that over 90% of students polled at our school are dissatisfied with school lunch, but only 5% are willing to pack their own lunches?

QUESTION LEAD Ask a question or a series of questions to draw your reader into your paper. Example: Have you ever wished for a pot of gold? What if you truly found one? Would it change your life? Well…

VIVID VISUALIZATION LEAD Give sensory details ( five senses ) to help your reader visualize (see), the scene in their “ mind ’ s eye ”. Example: The peeling paint and sagging roof made the cottage look sad and forgotten. A broken, old gray fence, with missing boards like missing teeth, made a chill creep up one ’ s spine. Surely, no one could live here!
