St Margatret's H.S1 Desktop Publishing Using a computer system, Desktop Publishing allows a user to create : Newsletters Invitations Award certificates Business cards etc

St Margatret's H.S2 To create a desktop publishing publication you will normally need : A computer system – generally a desktop or laptop. A high quality printer eg a laser printer. A desktop publishing program. A peripheral device such as a scanner or digital camera.

St Margatret's H.S3 The steps in creating a DTP publication are : The text is created using a word processor. The graphics needed can be created using a graphics program. scanned. captured using a digital camera. taken from clip art libraries.

St Margatret's H.S4 Document templates are created These contain information about the number of columns, the position of text and graphics and the general style of the publication. The templates are saved and can be used time after time to create similar or standard publications eg a weekly newsletter. Weekly News Graphic

St Margatret's H.S5 The text is imported from the word processor and inserted into the appropriate place in the publication. The graphics are imported and inserted into the appropriate place in the publication. The graphics can be scaled or cropped. Data from other programs such as spreadsheets or databases can also be imported and inserted into the appropriate place.

St Margatret's H.S6 Text for Headings and Sub-headings can be entered directly into the DTP program. Backgrounds colours and borders can be set. Text can be wrapped around graphics. St Margatret's H.S7 Text wrapped around a graphic.

St Margatret's H.S8 The finished publication is printed, checked for errors and if necessary printed again. If the publication is to be produced in large quantities or a very high quality printout is required then it can be sent to a professional printing service using or a portable storage media such as CD.

St Margatret's H.S9 Many DTP programs provide pre-prepared templates which can be used to provide the layout for common types of publications eg cards or invitations. These help the user to to create a more professional looking publication by completing some of the formatting for them. They also provide wizards which take the user step by step through the stages involved in setting up the publication. All the user has to do is to select what they want to do, click and move on.

St Margatret's H.S10 DTP programs also have a range of special features eg  text columns  banner headlines  drop capitals  templates  text flow around graphics Many of these have been mentioned earlier.

St Margatret's H.S11 Some Desktop Publishing programs do have similar features to a word processor with graphics capability - the ability to enter text, spell check programs and so on - but others do not. Finally

St Margatret's H.S12 So when using a desktop publisher it is normal to prepare any required text in a word processor and create any required graphics in a graphics package. The pre-pared text and graphics can then be inserted into the DTP publication as appropriate.
