Nutrition in islam Lecture 5 Nutrition in islam Lecture 5 Food in Hadeeth of the Prophet Dr. Muhammad abd elmonem Clinical Nutrition Department Umm Al-Qura University 03/01/1437

introduction It is a long way heritage that we should follow and be proud of the beloved prophet Mohammad peace be upon him has provided Muslims by many overall and detailed instructions and advices to enlighten our life and guiding the whole world His way of living and practice can be our lighthouse for our daily life

Food is one of the basic necessities of life. It is essential for the normal growth and development and to sustain life. All the essential nutrients must be eaten in the exact proportion. Too much of one nutrient and the absence of another, will lead to disease. Like everything else in life, there must be a balance, a point so often emphasized in the Qura’n and the“Sunnah” 03/01/1437

Islam draws a basic distinction between “Needs” and “Wants”. Human needs are limited but their wants are unlimited. Every human being needs minimum food, minimum shelter, minimum clothing, and maximum education 03/01/1437

For a Muslim the minimum food required for the healthy functioning of his body is also the “Optimum” requirement. In other words, enough is enough. Indeed, the “Sunnah”, like the Qura’n, had a lot to do with the eating habits of people. 03/01/1437

Food in hadeth There are many hadeth of the prophet PUH regarding eating and food. They can be classified under:  Etiquettes of eating  Health benefits  His eating and food practices

Etiquettes of eating –Eating slowly and in groups Dividing the stomach to three portions In the hadeth by the prophet PUH: عن المقدام بن مَعدِ يكرب قال : سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم يقول : " ما ملأ آدمي وعاءً شراً من بطنه ، بحَسبِ ابن آدم لُقيماتٍ يُقمنَ صُلبَه ، فإن كان لا محالة فاعلاً ، فَثُلُثٌ لطعامه ، وَ ثُلُثٌ لشرابه ، وَ ثُلُثٌ لِنَفَسِه (

Just a few portions We are advised to eat a little amount and avoided overeating. The Arabic word ( لقيمات ) was used in this hadeth to indicates a reduction in the size of portion we consume. The word ( لقيمة ),comes from the original word ( لقمة ) (Thumbnail word).

Just a few portions Overeating and indulging in food affect breathing It can cause shortness of breath and chest pain. This leads to poor digestions and absorption as blood flow might be slow down It causes a painful feeling and discomfort

Obesity and other diseases short-term effects, such as nausea, feelings of heaviness and headaches long-term effects, such as obesity, diabetes and heart diseases.

Eating when hungry and leave before fullness

Binge-eating disorder Overeating may indicate the presence of a binge- eating disorder, in which a person cannot stop eating, even if she feels sick from consuming too much food

Leave space for air It is important to have some empty area in stomach to aid the secretion to mix with food for digestion this is the third section

Leave space for air To lose weight surgeons now introduce a balloon in the stomach to decrease the amount of food consumed by the several obese individuals

Etiquettes of eating Use of right hand It is also important that the person should use his right hand for eating, since the left hand is used for removing dirt from the body or the floor and for cleaning and washing body after going to the toilet. 03/01/1437

Basic personal hygiene for Muslims –Hand washing before and after food, toilet and cooking Eating while setting not laying down Eating with three fingers not a full hand to reduce amount of food consumed Etiquettes of eating

Water drinking health Drinking in three measures and slowly directly from the cup Do not breath in food or water ( i.e do not puff in water cup) 03/01/1437
