What does it all mean? Early childhood – period from birth to nine years of age –Time to build a foundation for later learning If you are considering a career in EC ask yourself –Will there be a need for me? –What are the job responsibilities? –What personal characteristics do I need?

Social & Economic Changes that will AFFECT YOUR FUTURE

Families have changed! Women are earning higher degrees Couples are having fewer children Adults are waiting to get married until they are older Many families need a second paycheck Many single parent families Families see the value of early education

Changes in Employers’ Attitudes Corporate sponsored child care is the fastest growing type of child care May provide assistance as an optional benefit –Reasons Increased recruitment Higher morale Increased productivity May provide on-site child care or sick child care

Changes in Education Attitudes 2 out of 3 children participate in early childhood programs (30 hours a week) Parents understand their child’s developmental needs Studies show children who attend full-day kindergarten do better academically and socially Schools are starting to add 4K programs
