Where did they come from? Scientist believe that the Delaware Indians, also called Lenni Lanape, came from Asia across a land bridge called Beringia.

 The Delaware Indians lived in New Jersey New York and Ohio.

Daily Life Daily Life In the daytime they women of the Delaware sewed together turkey feathers to create a sleeveless cape while the men hunted all of the animal hide they needed to make the clothes.

 The Delaware Indians hunted, grew and made food. They hunted bear, moose, beaver and deer. They grew corn, wheat, and tobacco. They make bread, soups and puddings.

Hunting The Delaware Indians hunted bear, seal, turkey, raccoon, moose, caribou, and the most important animal to hunt was the white tailed deer.

 Delaware Indians lived in a house called wigwams. They were made of tree bark. First the Delaware would bend branches to make a dome shape. Then tree bark would be placed over the wigwam. There was a small hole at the top so smoke could rise from a small fire inside.

Clothing The Delaware Indians had to wear a variety of clothes because of the warm summers and cool winters. In the summer women wore skirts and shirts. Men wore leggings and a breech clout. In the winters all would wear tight clothing. Sometimes they would wear caps and mittens too. These items were usually made of deer or beaver.

 The Delaware Indians spoke many different languages such as Iroquois and Algonquian.

Transportation and tools  The Lenni Lenape Used bark and dugout canoes to travel on the Delaware River and the East Coast. The Indians used bows and arrows and shields to hunt.

Beliefs The Delaware Indians believed that every thing had a spirit. They also had a turkey ceremonial sash.

Flag and seal  The Lenni Lenape flag is white and has the tribal seal in the middle. The seals main colors are red and black, the 12 prayer sticks around the outer edge represent the Big House Church.

Wars They had a lot of wars including one of the biggest wars called the French and Indian War.

Chiefs There were several Indian chiefs. One of the best was Chief Lapowinsa.

 I hope you guys learned a lot about the Eastern Woodlands.
