How To Install a Wireless Card on Your Desktop PC Gavin Patel July 3, 3008 ENG 393

Introduction Installation of wireless card allows computer to connect to a wireless network. People in need of internet connection without Ethernet jacks near there desktop would need this. Installation is needed whenever individual currently has a wireless network set up and wishes to connect to it.

Introduction cont. Precautions need to be taken so as to not damage the computer or electrically shock oneself. Screwdriver, and pliers (optional) are needed to perform this process.

Step 1 Install the drivers that will come on a disk packaged with the wireless card.

Step 2 After the drivers have been installed, power down the computer and unplug the power cord. Unplugging the power cord is important so that no accidental shock may occur.

Step 3 Find the latch on your computer that allows the cover to slip off. Usually they are located on the back of the top or on the back of the computer.

Step 4 Carefully pull the latch and pull the case away from the computer. You should now be able to see the inside of the computer.

Step 5 Locate the PCI slots towards the front part of the computer. PCI slots allow the installation of additional cards. There may already be sound and graphics cards depending on your PC.

Step 6 Find an empty slot and place your wireless card in it. It should snap in so push until it is firmly in place. The side that is gold plated is that side that faces the PCI slots.

Step 7 After card is in place carefully slide the case back over the computer until the latch clicks into place. Try not to hold the inside of the computer when putting the case on as it may damage it.

Step 8 Connect your power cable back to the computer and turn your computer on.

Step 9 When windows boots, your computer will recognize new hardware found.

Step 10 Follow the instructions to finish the installation. Finally you can connect to a wireless network and access the internet with your PC.

Conclusion Warranty may vary depending on your wireless card so check the manual packaged with your wireless card for more information. Technical support is available by telephone with a number included in the manual.

Troubleshooting ProblemCauseSolution Unknown computers are connecting to your wireless network. Your wireless network is open for all to connect to. Create a protected network by password locking it.
