Biography Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Kathiawar Agency, British Indian Empire. Gandhi helped greatly to achieve India’s independence from Britain in 1946. He is best known for his nonviolent ways of handling conflict. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi, India by shots fired by Nathuram Godse.

Important Dates 1891-Gandhi passes the bar exam after attending Inner Temple Law School in the UK-He is officially a lawyer. 1908-As a protest to the Asian Population Registration Act in South Africa, Gandhi and fellow Indians burn their registation cards. 1942-Gandhi launches the Quit India campaign that declares Indian independence from British rule. 1946-Indian gains its independence.

Interesting Facts Gandhi once fasted (did not eat anything) for 21 days. Gandhi got married to Kastubai Makharji in an arranged marriage, when he was only 13. Gandhi lived in South Africa for 21 years. Gandhi was cremated and his ashes were spread all over the world. Gandhi followed a strict vegetarian diet.
