Increasing Demand for Higher Education in Virginia A Shared Responsibility: Northern Virginia Community College George Mason University Virginia’s Executive Branch and General Assembly

In-state Undergraduate Enrollment Growth in Virginia 10,000 more students wanting to go to college in ,000 more students wanting to go to college in 2011 Where will they go? Which schools can meet the demand?

What is Required to Meet the Demand? Facilities –Classrooms –Student Housing –Laboratories –Student Services Facilities Faculty –Teaching and research faculty –Maintain quality Student Services –“Traditional” student growth –Meet demands of “non traditional” students Maintaining quality while increasing size requires significant state support. Committed to expansion, only with state support.

Faculty Salary Increases SCHEV recommends 5.8% annual increase for teaching and research faculty. 3.5% increase for administrative faculty. 5.8% is the minimum required for George Mason to effectively compete for the best faculty. Is 3.5% enough given no salary increase in 2001?

Base Budget Adequacy SCHEV recommends funding 50% of the $19 million gap in Anticipate funding the rest of the $19 million gap in Recommends funding $3.7 million on maintenance gap. Any increase is important for George Mason. Does not address the need to fund George Mason at the same level as other doctoral universities.
