Environmental Variation D. Crowley, 2008

Environmental Variation  To understand what can cause environmental variation

Environmental Variation  Look at the pictures of Posh – what differences can you see?  What causes these differences?

Environmental Variation  What causes the differences below?  Amount of water; light; nutrients; space etc…

Environmental Variation  What causes the differences below?  The amount of food we eat can drastically change the way we appear  This is an example of environmental variation!

Environmental Variation  Characteristics of animals and plants can be affected by factors such as climate, diet, accidents, culture and lifestyle  If you eat too much you will become heavier, and if you eat too little you will become lighter  A plant in the shade of a big tree will not be able to photosynthesise as quickly as one in the sunshine, so it will be smaller  Variation in a feature as a result of the surroundings, is called environmental variation

Inherited & Environmental  Some variation within a species is inherited, and some variation is due to the environment  Variation in a feature as a result of inheritance from the parents, is called inherited variation  Variation in a feature as a result of a certain factor in the surroundings is called environmental variation

Inherited Or Environmental  Copy out these variations in your book, and say if they are inherited or environmental variations: - Hair colour (natural) Hair colour (natural) Hair length Hair length Language Language Eye colour Eye colour Gender (male / female) Gender (male / female) Weight Weight Colour of flowers (hydrangeas) Colour of flowers (hydrangeas) Skin colour Skin colour Religion Religion Lobbed / lobeless ears Lobbed / lobeless ears Tattoos Tattoos Inherited Environmental Inherited Environmental Environmental (acid / alkali soil) Inherited Environmental Inherited Environmental

Gone Fishing  Complete the gone fishing worksheet

Gone Fishing 1. The warmer the water, the less oxygen dissolves & the warmer the water, the more gill movements per minute 2. The less oxygen dissolved, the more gill movements per minute Oxygen dissolved Gill Movement increasing

Gone Fishing 4. A group of organisms that can reproduce producing reproductively viable offspring 5. Same species – 1, 9 & 10; 3, 4, 6 & 7; 2, 5 & 8 6. Variations include body shape; number of fins; position of fins; markings etc… 7. Same species variations include markings and body length 8. The longer the fish, the more sports it has on its tail 9. Cross between these two fish (characteristics from each) 10. Mule (horse + donkey); liger (tiger + lion); zebroid (horse + zebra) 11. Hybrids cannot reproduce
